State Route 74, also known as Ortega Highway, will be fully closed for 55 hours beginning the night of Sept. 11 as construction continues on a widening and safety improvement project.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and continue through 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Caltrans said resident access will be permitted during the closure through a pilot car. There will be no through access between Orange County and Lake Elsinore, and motorists should expect delays.
The closure is part of a $96.1 million project to widen lanes and shoulders and add safety features along Ortega Highway, from just west of Monte Vista Street to Grand Avenue.
Construction activity has also included weeknight flagging operations from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., with additional nighttime closures and daytime work as needed. A previous 55 hour full weekend closure was held from Aug. 28 through Aug. 31.
The highway’s narrow two lane configuration and limited shoulder width require full closures for some construction activities, according to Caltrans.
