City offers Walking & Hiking Club as part of healthy living program

Residents looking to get outside and explore local trails have a free, city-run option that now meets once a month on the fourth Saturday.

The Lake Elsinore Walking and Hiking Club, part of the city’s Healthy LE program, encourages residents of all ages and fitness levels to take part in guided walks and hikes at local parks and regional trails.

The club is in its third year and currently has about 15 active members, according to Recreation Coordinator Lennox Wilson.

Wilson said the program started from a personal interest in hiking.

“It’s always been a hobby of mine to go hiking,” Wilson said. “I figured why not have it with the city as well?”

The club is free and open to the public. While participants are encouraged to register ahead of time, walk-ups are also welcome.

Residents can sign up online through the city’s website or in person at facilities including the neighborhood center, community center and senior center. QR codes are also provided at hikes for on-site registration.

Wilson said the group includes both casual walkers and more experienced hikers.

“We have a lot of people who just like to get active, maybe just go on walks throughout the week,” he said. “And then we also have people who are avid hikers and just love to hike.”

The club meets at 8 a.m. at varying locations each month, with the next outing scheduled for June 27. Hike locations are announced in advance through the city’s recreation website and social media pages.

Wilson said participants most enjoy the social aspect of the club.

“I think it’s the camaraderie,” he said. “Being able to come and just have a conversation with like-minded people who all love getting out in nature and just being healthy.”

He said hikes typically last about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the trail.

The program also includes easier walking options for residents who may not be looking for more strenuous hikes.

“We do accommodate those folks who may not want to do a hike through Santa Rosa or the Ortega Mountains,” he said. “We do plan for a park stroll here and there.”

Wilson pointed to one hike at the Vernal Pool Trailhead as a standout moment.

“You could just see for miles and it was lush green, the sun rising in the distance,” he said. “It was just picture perfect.”

He also recalled the club’s very first hike at a local park, where about 30 people participated. Another notable event was the Glow Walk the club hosted in November 2025, a family-friendly evening walk held after sunset with glow sticks and other light-up items.

WIlson said the club’s goal is to help residents stay active and get outside.

“Join us, whether you’re just starting out, you want to see if this is for you, or you’re really experienced,” he said. “Everyone is welcome.”
