A Lake Elsinore man was killed early Sunday when the vehicle he was driving the wrong way on the 91 Freeway crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer, authorities said.
The County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Abel Quintero, age 25. At approximately 5:34 a.m., Quintero was driving a black Ford F-150 eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway west of Green River Road, according to a CHP news release. As CHP units responded to 911 calls from motorists were attempting to locate the vehicle, the Ford was involved in a head-on collision with a white Volvo tractor-trailer near Serfas Club Drive.
The driver of the Volvo, a 20-year-old resident of Moreno Valley, suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, said CHP Officer Javier Navarro.
Any witnesses to this incident are encouraged to call the California Highway Patrol’s Accident Investigation Unit at 951-324-7210.
