The Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station conducted an enforcement operation over the Fourth of July holiday weekend to combat illegal and dangerous fireworks in the Lake Elsinore area, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
The Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station Special Enforcement Team and Investigations Bureau led the operation. Authorities issued 33 citations for possession of fireworks and six criminal violations for possession with intent to distribute fireworks. About 750 pounds of fireworks were also seized and will be destroyed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Hazardous Devices Team, according to the sheriff’s office.
Individuals contacted during the operation were also educated about the dangers of illegal fireworks, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office said numerous medical emergencies occur every year due to the use and possession of dangerous fireworks, some of them fatal.
Authorities encouraged residents to leave fireworks displays to licensed professionals and to report criminal activity to sheriff’s dispatch at 951-776-1099, or call 911 in an emergency.
