Deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station conducted a traffic enforcement operation after investigating a planned illegal e-bike and e-motorcycle takeover event in Lake Elsinore, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began June 10. During the investigation, deputies learned the takeover event was scheduled to take place June 12 at Summerlake Park in the 900 block of Broadway Street, authorities said.
Deputies assigned to the station’s traffic team conducted a traffic enforcement operation in response to the planned event.
During the operation, deputies contacted multiple juveniles and educated them about restrictions on e-bike use, as well as the dangers and consequences of participating in takeover events. The juveniles and their bikes were later released to their parents or guardians, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies also cited two adults. Their bikes were towed and will be stored until proper licensing is obtained and equipment violations are corrected, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office reminded residents that an e-bike without pedals and with a motor exceeding 750 watts is considered an electric motorcycle and cannot legally be operated by unlicensed youth on public roadways.Â
To legally operate an electric motorcycle on a roadway, riders must have a valid motorcycle license issued by the DMV, registration, liability insurance and a Department of Transportation certified motorcycle helmet.Â
