The Wreck in downtown Lake Elsinore is open again, bringing live entertainment back to one of the city’s landmark buildings.
The building at 117 W. Graham Ave. has reopened as a dueling piano bar under new ownership, starting a new chapter for a space that has changed over the years but stayed a familiar part of downtown.
“This is about honoring the legacy of The Wreck while creating something exciting for the future of Lake Elsinore,” ownership said. “We wanted to build a place where people can come together for live entertainment, great atmosphere and a strong sense of community.”
The Wreck has lived several lives. Before it was a bar, the building was part of the city’s public recreation program and opened as a bowling alley and community gathering space.
Over time, it became the neighborhood bar. Mayor Bob Magee said in the early 1990s, newspaper reporters would gather there after work to trade stories with locals.
“At the turn of this century, the bar was a place for residents to gather after a City Council meeting and share concerns with former councilman Thomas Buckley,” Magee said. “Buckley liked to hold court there after meetings while playing darts.”
He also pointed to its place in pop culture history.
“This is the bar that Steve McQueen, Malcom Smith and Bruce Brown visited during the filming of the movie ‘On Any Sunday’ in 1970,” Magee said.
Now, city leaders say the updated space brings a different kind of experience.
Inside, the renovations include an expanded bar, a dedicated stage for live music and dueling piano performances, upgraded pool tables and game area, and updated lighting and sound.
“The renovations inside are amazing,” Magee said. “This is a place you can take your wife on a date and enjoy a night of spirits and live entertainment and feel safe.”
Parts of the building’s history remain, including the mural on the front of the building painted by local artist Robin Golden. The artwork is a nod to Lake Elsinore’s Grand Prix motocross history and includes a key identifying those featured in the mural.
The original signage was also kept and refreshed rather than replaced.
Economic Development Director Gina Gonzalez said that a balance between old and new has been important to the project.
“Its revival reflects both a respect for the past and a shared enthusiasm for the future of downtown,” Gonzalez said.
She said the city worked closely with the new owners to help move the project forward.
“The City of Lake Elsinore has played an active and supportive role in facilitating The Wreck’s reopening as part of its broader commitment to downtown revitalization and economic development,” Gonzalez said. “Through early conversations of the acquisition to streamlined processing and collaborative partnerships with the owners, the City has helped create an environment where unique and historically significant projects like this can succeed.”
Gonzalez said the venue is expected to draw more people into the downtown area and support nearby businesses.
“As a dynamic entertainment venue, it will increase foot traffic and encourage people to explore surrounding shops, restaurants, and services,” she said.
A formal ribbon cutting has not been scheduled yet, but Gonzalez said the community anticipation has been positive.
More updates to the space could still be ahead. Plans include a potential outdoor entertainment area and use of an adjacent hall to expand events and performances.
For now, the reopening brings back a familiar spot with a new feel.
“Continued investment in downtown through projects like The Wreck demonstrates forward momentum and reinforces Lake Elsinore’s identity as a unique and evolving community,” Gonzalez said. “By blending historic significance with new energy and experiences, the venue will contribute to a lively, connected downtown that benefits the entire local economy.”
