The City of Lake Elsinore celebrated the grand opening of its new Civic Center Oct. 1 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the building.

“Today is a historic day for Lake Elsinore,” City Manager Jason Simpson said during the ceremony. “We are celebrating the opening of the largest public facilities project in our city’s 138-year history.”
The four-story building at 130 S. Main St. brings city services together into one accessible facility. Simpson said it includes modern council chambers, improved technology and security, and community gathering areas.

The building also includes office space for city staff, along with public areas where residents can access city services. A third-floor balcony and a rooftop outdoor area offer views of the lake.
“Lake Elsinore has grown from a small lakeside town into a dynamic and growing city,” Simpson said. “With the growth comes a responsibility to ensure that the way we serve residents, businesses and visitors grows with it. This building is designed to do exactly that.”

Mayor Bob Magee spoke about the Civic Center’s location at Main Street and Graham Avenue and the history of the site.
“This intersection is the heart of our town and for more than 138 years this location has been etched in people’s minds when they think about Lake Elsinore’s government and our city founders,” Magee said.
Directly next to the Civic Center is the former City Hall building. Magee said it served as a jail, firehouse and bank before becoming City Hall in 1934.
“The old City Hall remains attached to the new building, a reminder of where we came from and where we are going,” Magee said.

The new Civic Center also includes Lake Elsinore Engine No. 1 in its lobby. Magee said the engine went into service in 1925 and replaced an earlier horse drawn wagon that volunteers had modified to carry water.
“This engine serves as a stark reminder of how our predecessors faced disasters with courage and commitment with only the most basic of tools,” Magee said.

In addition to Engine No. 1, the ground-level lobby also has glass panels surrounding it.
“The ground level focal point at the corner of Main and Graham is wrapped with a glass facade, revealing the lobby as a constant reminder of government’s commitment to transparency and openness while doing the public’s business,” Magee said.

Assemblymember Natasha Johnson, who previously served on the Lake Elsinore City Council, also spoke during the ceremony.
“I was so proud to hear that we were taking on a project like this in the city of Lake Elsinore,” she said. “Anybody that has lived here for any amount of time knows that the revitalization of downtown is so important and this is just one of those steps to move us forward.”

After the ceremony, community members were invited inside to tour the new Civic Center and explore the building.
“This will be a gathering point for public dialogue, opposing points of view, and respectful interchange,” Magee said. “It will be the people’s house, where we are all responsible for being the stewards of this facility and the public’s trust. This new civic center welcomes everyone, and embraces our future, while respecting our past.”
