Fatal Lake Elsinore crash leaves two dead, two injured

Two drivers are reported as having fatal injuries following a head-on crash Tuesday night on Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore, according to a California Highway Patrol collision report.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. Aug. 25 on Grand Avenue south of Gregory Place.

According to the report, a Chevrolet Camaro was traveling northbound on Grand Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver veered left, crossed the center portion of the roadway and entered the southbound lane. The Camaro then collided head-on with a Toyota Camry traveling southbound.

The CHP report identifies the Camaro driver as Andy Robles Morales, 22, of Lake Elsinore, and the Camry driver as Joseph Chester Collins, 56, of Wildomar. Both drivers are reported as having fatal injuries. 

According to the report, Collins sustained major injuries and was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The report does not provide additional information about Morales’ status or death.

Two passengers in the Camaro, Miguel Cortez, 23, and Nelson Robles Morales, 26, both of Lake Elsinore, are reported as having major injuries. CHP said they were transported to Inland Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Grand Avenue was closed for about three and a half hours while CHP officers investigated the crash and crews cleared the roadway.

It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, according to CHP. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
